Sphinx is the second episode of the first season of The Adventures of Puss in Boots. The episode released on January 9, 2015.

Overview

Puss accidentally gives the orphans a magic substance that will ultimately make them explode. The only cure is guarded by a Sphinx who challenges Puss with riddles – and contrary to his own belief, Puss is not good at riddles.

Summary

At night the citizens of San Lorenzo are already asleep. Two thieves are attempting to break into the Treasure House. One thief tells the other to hurry up as Puss in Boots could still be aware of their presence. He also tells him that Puss “steals the breath of sleeping babies.” The thief mutters at him but notices Esme. He shrieks and Esme opens her eyes but with both her pupils missing. She tells him to approach her. She then whistles which alarms Toby, Toby then jumps the thief which alerts the other thief. Kid Pickles squeezes Pickle juice at the thief‘s face causing him to cover his face and scream in pain. The thief trips over the other thief, Vina twists the thief’s finger and they are both defeated. Puss praises the orphans for their work and shames the thieves. They are both placed in jail inside the cantina and Puss tells Pajuna to not receive them a drink. Pajuna gives them milkshakes which caused the thieves to be overjoyed which angered Puss but Pajuna tells him that she’s running a business.

Dulcinea watches as the orphans water plants and she quotes from the book, Dulcinea informs to Kid Pickles that he shouldn’t water the plant with Pickle Juice as it is toxic to plants. Kid Pickles then said it ain’t killed him yet and he drinks it. Dulcinea hears Puss’s voice and assumes that it was the tree beside her, Puss brings Dulcinea to the tree and points down to the orphans. Puss tells Dulcinea he wants to give them a treat for being excellent.

Puss suggests to make Turrón And promised to make it the finest. Dulcinea tells Puss he can’t cook but Puss doesn’t want to admit it so be brushed it off claiming that the toast and mill he burned was the bread being faulty. Dulcinea convinced tells him that the orphanage is out of sugar, Puss is confident that he’ll find the sugar so he decides to search in the Catina. Puss notices Pajuna is gone and sees the thieves drinking the milkshakes. He asks what they’re having and they say it was Pajuna’s new creation “Milkshakes.” Puss notices a sugar jar labeled “Sugar“ on the table. He says he is just borrowing it and as he walks out to make the candy he tells the thieves to not enjoy being imprisonment, the thieves eventually received a brain freeze and Puss takes pride in the thieves suffering.

Later the orphans outside the orphanage ask what’s happening, Dulcinea tells them there’s surprise awaiting. Puss hands out the  Turrón to everyone, the orphans overjoyed take one and eat them. Señora Zapata is disconsolate that Puss is giving candy that is sugar filled, and tells him they get hyper when they eat sugary food. Puss tries to debate about Señora Zapata‘s claim by saying a “little” sugar won’t cause any harm and that they’ll remain calm until he starts noticing the orphans acting very hyper and energetic. Dulcinea notices an unusual smell in the jar and complains that this might not be normal sugar. Puss takes a whiff of it and is alarmed. Back at the catina Pajuna is very upset that Puss gave the orphans a very fatal amount of sugar, Puss tells Pajuna that he thought it was sugar since the jar was labeled “Sugar.” Pajuna tells the both of them that the Sugar label was just an abbreviation of Special Unfiltered Ground Arima Root. A magic sugar that can be fatal if not handled properly. She tells them that you should only have one grain for at least once a year to regenerate energy. The amount Puss gave to them will cause the orphans to get energetic until they slow down, start to glow and explode.

Puss faces the orphans who tie up Señor Zapata. Puss immediately asks Pajuna if there‘s a cure. The only cure was the Hour Glass of Eurythion. But the problem is it is guarded by a fearsome creature known as the “Sphinx.” Puss takes the challenge to journey through The Desert of Pain, Forest of Mystery and Kingdom of Darkness. On his first attempt of receiving the Hourglass he finally encountered the Sphinx. Puss tells her he needs the hourglass and the Sphinx tells him the only way to obtain it was to answer the riddle correctly. He only has 5 limited riddles and if he incorrectly missed all 5 she would have to eat him. Her first riddle was “What walks on four legs at dawn, two legs at midday, and three legs at dusk.“ His answer was Yellow. The Sphinx mocks Puss about his answer and that the correct answer was Man, and sends him all the way back to San Lorenzo. Dulcinea yells at Puss to get the Hourglass as the children are worsening.

Puss once again travels through the 3 locations that guide to the Sphinx and meets the Sphinx again. Her second riddle was “The rich need it, but the poor have it, and if you breath it you die.” Puss answers Seven, the Sphinx yells at him that it was not a number, Puss changes his answer to Six and the Sphinx told him the correct answer if nothing and once again sends him back to San Lorenzo. Puss attempts to journey again on his third try, The Sphinx third riddle was “I am always hungry and must be fed, the finger I touch will soon turn red.” Puss answers Aglet and the Sphinx tells him it was fire and sends him back. Back at San Lorenzo the children are beginning to vibrate Puss travels through again and meets the Sphinx again for the fourth time. The riddle is “What is full of holes and yet holds water.” Puss answers Roberto Ortiz, 461 Mariposa Street, Barcelona. Sphinx tells him it was a sponge and teleports him back. The children are now starting to slow down and glow, Pajuna states that this is the final stage of the progressive poisoning of the sugar. Puss still continued to answer the riddle incorrectly.

Puss uses his "Cute Kitten Eyes" against the Sphinx.

The Sphinx warns Puss that this is his fifth riddle and if he answered incorrectly she would have to eat him. Puss still continues to try and the last riddle was “I am always coming, but never here, never arriving, but always near.” Puss answers by popping his lip. The Sphinx confused questions if that was his answer. Puss just responds again with popping his lip. The Sphinx answers it was tomorrow and tries to eat him. Puss stops her by saying he‘s not a cat of words rather a cat of action. The Sphinx then challenges him to fight, Puss uses this as a distraction to get the Hourglass but the Sphinx puts it back to it’s position and tries to eat him, Puss does his cute eye technique and the Sphinx let’s him go, the Sphinx complains about her job and Puss asks if he could just have the Hourglass then. The Sphinx gives him a negative answer by saying that the only was to get it is to answer the riddle.

Puss tells her that he’s a master at riddles but the Sphinx disagrees. Puss finally admits that he’s not always good at something and then points it out on her, he then challenges her to come up with easy riddles, of course Puss answers then all wrong and the Sphinx eventually decides to give to him. The Sphinx complains that she wants a job that’s helpful towards people, Puss tells her that he knows somebody who needs her help. Dulcinea approaches Esme, Pajuna informs her that she shouldn’t be that close as they’re seriously going to explode, Dulcinea tells her that if they’re going that she’ll go with them. Puss and the Sphinx fly over the town, Puss drops and hits the Hourglass with his sword sending magical particles which cures the children. They all fall asleep and Puss asks if they’re alright. Pajuna tells them they’re fine but might sleep for 7 days. The Sphinx excited asks what her new career could be. Puss tells her that she could help with Bandits entering down. At night thieves attempt to enter San Lorenzo but are stoped by the Sphinx and are told to answer a riddle. They answer incorrectly and are tortured by the Sphinx.

• Learn to admit when you are wrong or can't do something.
